As a musician and songwriter, it is simply incredible how many of his songs are just in your head. I think he had a tremendous talent for writing really well-constructed songs that could seem simple, lyrically and/or musically, but have a sort of odd take or odd phrase that made them memorable. It’s a rare talent, and even more rare over the long haul. I’m a musician, and I have several of his songs in my active repertoire of tunes. Except for “Mary Jane’s Last Dance,” which is obviously well known (and fun—people love it), the ones I play are deeper cuts. As an example,
I’d highly recommend “The Trip to Pirate’s Cove.” Just a great number, but seldom heard. And that’s kind of the thing about Tom. From 1976 on, he just kept putting out solid rock music that cut across the genre in terms of style. I don’t think there’s anyone who rivalled his longevity, productivity, and quality over that same time frame. Even Springsteen kind of took the 90’s “off” to some extent. In addition, the guys who wanted to play with him, including George Harrison and Bob Dylan, say a lot about his musicianship and general vibe.
