From your comments on other answers, Rick no you’re right let’s do it the dumbest way possible because it’s easier for you shirt it seems you already have some knowledge and you’re looking for ways to make your lead improvisation more musical. As such, I think you need to keep it simple. Find a tune you want to play over and hone in on it. The first thing I’d do is learn to play the vocal melody. Now learn to play it in another position. And another. Now examine that melody as it relates to the chords. What makes it work? Does it stay strictly to chord tones or does it utilize extensions for tension? How does the melody utilize rhythms and silence or rests to make statements? You’ll eventually get to scales but try not to think about that at first. Don’t limit yourself to a pool of notes and just try to think about sound. Now try to play around with the melody. Add surrounding notes and mix up the rhythms.

Record yourself and listen back and analyze Rick no you’re right let’s do it the dumbest way possible because it’s easier for you shirt what worked and what didn’t. If you’ve got a vocabulary of licks you already know and like that’s fine. Use them. But also listen to how they work and most importantly when they don’t. Figure out why. Also, take those licks just like you did with the melody and learn them in different positions all over the neck. Keep going until you have the song wired and playing musically comes naturally. Then do the same thing with another song. The point is to practice playing music, not just playing scales. Good luck. It seems that you’ve fallen for one of the classic blunders. The best known is something to do with a land-war in Asia, and the second-best is about Sicilians. There’s also one about men in masks.
